Britney's Letter

Britney's Story

Britney was about 3 months old when her eyes started to cross. I asked her pediatrician about it and she said not to worry. Well at 4 months it was worse, so I talked to her about having a strabismus surgery done when she was about 8 months old. She told me that it wasn't necessary to have her see a childrens opthamologist until she was 15 months. Thank God that I insisted on her seeing one anyway. It took 2 months for the pediatrician to get Britney an appt.

The Opthamologist right away noticed 2 spots in her eyes, but he wanted to have a second opinion, so he sent us to another doctor, he agreed  but still wanted a third opinion, so he sent us to Childrens Hospital in Los Angeles California to Dr. Murphree who had pionered a treatment using a combanation of Chemo and Lazer Treatments. He agreed that it was Retinoblastoma and informed us that Britney needed to start treatments the next day. And so started a seemingly endless and vigorous fight to save Britney's eyes.

She started out with 9 tumors in one eye and 5 in the other. She would have Chemo one day and Lazers for 2 weeks repeating the cycle several times. She also recieved cryotherapy and a radiation plate. She would be in the O.R. for 6 to 7 hours when she started treatments. It was only later that we were told that Britney was 1 to 2 weeks away from having both of her eyes enucleated. If I hadn't of followed my heart she wouldn't be able to see all of the beauties that life has to offer.

I called her pediatrician to let her know what Britney had been diagnosed with. She was stuned, then she told me that they are not trained to look for that. She then told me that she would deffinatley listen to mothers intuitions more often. Britney is 6 now and has been in remission for 2 1/2 years now and sees about 20/50 in one eye and 20/200 in the other. She still sees Dr. Murphree every 6 months and was recentley featured in Childrens Hospitals Imagine The Possibilities Magazine. We are very proud of her triumph and pray that other children have the same sucess.

Thank You again for allowing us to share our story.
